Annual Pet Appreciation Week is June 1 through June 7.  Show them how much you love them with some delectable homemade treats!

Back in March of this year, we shared a delicious recipe for some homemade dog treats that featured all of our favorite healthy living concepts.  The recipe was a major home run that hit all the bases:  dairy-free, gluten-free, wheat free, low sodium, vegetarian, and sugar-conscious.

We wanted to revisit the idea and give you some new recipes to add to your baking repertoire, because as we said back in March, nothing says “I Love You” like freshly baked cookies.  This time, we’ve taken a more well-rounded approach and have thrown in some baking ideas for the kitties, too.  Try them out, and let us know what you think!

Joy The Baker:  Chewy Cat Treats for Cats – Visit her page and enjoy her entertaining narrative of her love for her best friend, appropriately named “Kitten”.  Joy has posted a ton of photos of her cat doing funny cat things, and it’s a generally enjoyable read.  At the bottom of the page, you will see her recipe and instructions for baking these chewy treats for your cat (which she created in celebration of Kitten’s birthday).

Tuna Treats for Cats AND Dogs – Food.com member, The Fudge Lady, has taken a more diplomatic approach.  She has created a mouth-watering tuna treat that is appropriate for both of our favorite species.  (Don’t worry!  Even though she is known as The Fudge Lady, she knows that chocolate is not a good idea for your furry family members.  No cocoa here!).  Check out this recipe, which features garbanzo beans as one of its main ingredients.

Sweet Potato and Apple Treats for Dogs – Whole Foods does it again!  These are the same great pet-lovers who brought you the peanut butter banana treats that we featured in March.  This recipe might not quite as health-conscious as the previous one, but we still love it!  At 35 calories per treat, it’s still not bad (and it’s better than most of the premade treats found in stores).

You love your pets and so do we!  We hope they enjoy!  Happy baking!

(Always remember to speak with your veterinarian about your pet’s dietary restrictions.  While these treats are all appropriate for generally healthy pets, they may not be suited for pets who are on special restricted diets.  The only way to find out is to ask!)
